WetCoastMagus Best most reliable car I have ever owned January 19, 2020 535i xDrive All options
Overall Score
I bought this car new in April 2009. It had 6 km on the odometer when I picked it up at the dealer. It has the upgraded stereo, the tech package including heads up display, voice control etc., executive package, comfort package It was amazing tech for 2009, even now it holds up against new cars. Even now the keyless entry is better than what I have seen on all non-bmw cars. I love the way the ambient lighting works and while I used to think a heads up display was a feature, now I would not own a car without it. There is a lot of other tech that used to stand out but over time have just become how a car should be so while I don't notice it on my car, I notice it missing on other cars when I drive them. The performance has always been great, when the twin turbos kick in it puts a smile on your face. The handling has always been top notch and it goes around corners like it was on rails. This has lead to issues when I drive rental cars as I tend to go faster around corners than they are typically built for. It has been an extremely reliable car. Other than tires, brake pads, one battery, and oil changes I have never done anything to this car. The all wheel drive handles amazing even under winter conditions. I originally didn't like the way the signal lights work, but after about an hour they make total sense. I do have one complaint, the cup holders are unnecessarily complicated they way they pop out of the dash. They have never caused a problem, but seem odd. It can get very good gas mileage if you drive like an old lady. I have done that just to see and I can get to about 9l/100km. The car is way to fun to drive to keep that up so over the 10 years I have owned it I average 12.6l/100 km.

Issue: Some vehicles may contain a replacement sport steering wheel with a Takata driver-front air bag module. Certain conditions, including long-term exposure to high absolute humidity and temperature, combined with high temperature cycling, may eventually degrade the propellant contained in the driver-front airbag. This could cause the airbag to deploy with more force than normal. If the airbag inflator ruptures, fragments could be propelled toward vehicle occupants or cause damage to the airbag assembly, preventing its proper function. Safety Risk: If the vehicle is involved in a crash requiring an airbag deployment, the airbag inflator could rupture and create a risk of injury. Corrective Action: The company will notify owners by mail. Owners will be instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer to have an inspection performed. If a Takata airbag inflator is found, then the driver-front airbag module will be replaced. Note: The Canadian climate results in the propellant degrading slowly. This recall is being conducted as a precaution to address future risk. It is expected that all airbag inflators will be replaced before their function would be affected.

In rare circumstances, this condition could result in smouldering particles and lead to the melting of the intake manifold, increasing the risk of a fire causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will inspect the EGR cooler, and if necessary, replace it. If it is determined that the EGR cooler has leaked internally, the intake manifold will also be replaced. The EGR pipe connecting the cooler to the manifold will be cleaned. Certain vehicles, which were parked at the port of entry in Halifax during the ice storms in February 2015, may have been exposed to excessive standing water and salt for an extended period due to this isolated environmental incident. Certain MINI models could have corrosion at the starter motor power supply cable connectors, which could lead to the inability to restart the engine following an engine shutdown by the start-stop (MSA) system, increasing the risk of crash causing injury in a traffic situation. On certain BMW models, the lubrication of some internal components within the steering rack may have been exposed to excessive water or salt which could result in higher than normal steering effort or steering binding, increasing the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. In addition, electrical wires and/or connectors in all affected vehicles may have been exposed to water or salt, which could lead to increased electrical system resistance, and increase the risk of fire causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Owners should contact their selling Retailer regarding this recall. Affected vehicles will be inspected. Some vehicles will be taken out of service immediately and owners will be provided with temporary transportation until a new replacement vehicle is available. All other vehicles are cleared of this safety concern and may continue to be driven until a new replacement vehicle is available. In rare instances the engine could stall, increasing the risk of a collision causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will replace housing bolts that break and perform associated repairs for 10 years/unlimited mileage from the vehicle's in-service date. Note: This applies only to vehicles not covered by recall 2014-127.

On certain vehicles, the front passenger seat occupant detection mat can fatigue over time. As a result, the passenger airbag could deactivate, illuminating the airbag warning lamp and the passenger airbag ON/OFF lamp. Failure of the passenger airbag to deploy during a crash (where deployment is warranted) could increase the risk of personal injury to the seat occupant. Correction: Vehicles will receive special extended warranty coverage of 10 years from first registration. Under this special coverage program, vehicles which experience this condition will have the occupant detection mat replaced.

On certain vehicles, the insulated bulkhead connector (used to join the two halves of the positive battery cable) may have been incorrectly installed during vehicle assembly. Over time, the bolt connection could loosen, which would increase electrical resistance. In addition, an incorrectly insulated bulkhead connector could allow humidity to accumulate at this location, causing current leakage. These issues could cause the cable connection to overheat, which could result in a vehicle fire causing property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: Dealers will inspect and, as necessary, secure the insulated bulkhead connector. In addition, protective grease will be added to the area and the plastic battery positive terminal cover will be replaced.

Certain 550I, 650I cabriolet, 650I coupe, and X5 vehicles equipped with a V8 engine, operated in conditions of below-freezing temperatures combined with low humidity, may suffer an electrostatic discharge at the fuel rails. If this were to occur, the engine's Electronic Control Unit (ECU) could be affected such that engine stalling could result. If the engine were to stall, this would result in a loss of power steering. Loss of power steering could lead to a condition in which vehicle handling and control were impaired. Correction: Dealers will install two additional ground cable between the fuel rails and the ground connection of the ignition coils.

Certain passenger vehicles built with standard (non-sport) suspension and equipped with continental ContTuringContact CH95 EcoPlus tires in the size 225/65R16 95H, having dotted codes 4001, 4101, or 4201. During the tire mounting process, the outer sidewall surface may have been cut by a sharp edge. Operation of the vehicle over a long period of time could lead to a reduction of inflation pressure. Continued driving with low inflation pressure in the tire could ultimately result in damage to the tire, affect vehicle handling and control, and could in some cases result in a vehicle crash.
